Fellow Clear Lakers: As was posted earlier by Sally's granddaughter, Sally Eckrich went to heaven on January 22nd. Here is information for her funeral arrangements. On Friday, January 30th there will be a showing at Divine Mercy Funeral Home on Lake Avenue in Fort Wayne from 3:00-7:00 with a Rosary at 3:00. Then on Saturday , January 31st at 11:00 am there will be a Mass at St. Paul's Chapel here at the lake with calling one hour before. Sally's final resting place will be at the Catholic Cemetery on Lake avenue next to Tom. After the funeral everyone will meet at 1:30 pm at the Resurrection Chapel at the Catholic Cemetry. May Sally Rest in Peace.

Sorry to hear about all the recent passings. Condolences to all. Not surprised. The added radiation is finishing us off, too. And the impending storm with below freezing temps will be the end with no generator. One electric heater already went out and we're at 62* with power on, only electric plug in heaters since the HVAC disaster now at $991 a month NIPSCO bill since the 22% price hike for 2026 in our 1488 s/f 1-story house. What's wrong with this picture? HVAC for sale, barely used. Make offer. Needs a coil and probably a fitting one tech said, butno remediation to date. So, RSVP any help if the power goes out again. No help last time so I thought I'd let people know we're in trouble here, or ...still in trouble here. No cell phone but landline will work with our other phone when power is out. 495-3211 No email during power outs. Evan still here in Hospice, thanks to HVAC disaster/injuries, so we can't get in the car to find a safe place IF roads were passable and if there was a safe place to go. Former 'rides' in past years found nothing available. Clear Lake lost a true treasure with the passing of Sally Eckrich. She was one of the most gracious, generous and classy women you could ever meet. She was loved by so many people and those lucky enough to have been her friend will carry pleasant memories of her forever. We may lose icons on Clear Lake, but their legacy remains with us all and Clear Lake is a better place because of her.

It's official! Today Jan 19th Clear Lake (and Round Lake) have completely froze over......again LOL. Looks like the ice may be here for awhile now. No one picked todays date. Sorry Jack Horrell, I thought you had the correct guess for yesterday but there were 2 open spots about 100 yards each as of last evening on the North and South side of the island, but good guess! The annual Jack Gibson Memorial Scholarship Polar Bear Plunge is set for THIS WEDNESDAY, New Years Eve at the public beach on Hamilton Lake. I know Marble Lake in Quincy has an event in late January or early February for the annual Tip UP festival every year. I have attended that one for over 50 years but not as a participant just as an observer. It's a blast to watch! It would be great if someone would chair one here at CL though.

For the visual on what this does to people, find StarGate Atlantis, Season 3, Episode 12: Echoes. We have not 'seen' any interdimensional visions as shown in the episode. My FB feed finds people moving out of their homes and apartment buildings due to the ELF after f/o install. Other people in our area have to be feeling this. If not, know it's in your mix anyway. Usually in early a.m., today around 7 a.m. again, then likely lower ir not 'off.' RSVP anyone else noticing this, just for grins since nothing can or will be done about it. Thanks.

Reprint of the 'Clear Lake History Book `

At the request of Clear Lake residents, the Clear Lake Association commissioned a second printing of the hardcover book Clear Lake - A Place to Remember.

We began selling these books over the Labor Day weekend and of the 105 books that were initially purchased, 25 are left for sale. Each book is $75.00.

If you are interested in buying one or more of these last remaining copies, you can email Alex Connett at president@clearlakeassociation.org to make arrangements to pick up them up. If you are not at the lake, you could have a friend or neighbor pick up for you. These books would make a great gift.

The original book was printed to help raise funds to purchase Kasota Island and includes stories about the history of the lake, surrounding area, and families involved with the lake’s past. These books are identical to the original hard cover book with one improvement. The new books include an index by family name at the back of the book.

This may seem strange but I just cannot recycle these boxes. One is 18 x 18 x 6 and the other is slightly smaller with a fold down top. Both boxes are very clean and would make great boxes to ship your holiday gifts. I would rather they were used instead of just recycled. If you would like them please contact me amd come get them. Most of you know that Clear Lake is a spring fed lake. It is fed from the Michindoh Aquifer that was formed during the last ice age. The lake is primarily fed by groundwater springs that flow upward from the Michindoh Aquifer beneath it. These springs help keep the lake’s water clear and cool, which is part of how Clear Lake got its name. According to AI, being connected to the aquifer Clear Lake maintains stable water levels and high-water quality, even during dry periods. There is a company called AquaBounty Technologies, Inc that was issued permits to locate a genetically modified salmon farm in Pioneer, Ohio. They have also obtained a permit from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to withdraw groundwater from the Michindoh Aquifer. The permit authorized withdrawal of up to 5.25 million gallons per day. After water use, the water was to be treated and released into the St. Joe River, which then flows to Lake Erie. Currently the AquaBounty Technologies project in Pioneer, Ohio is not operational and appears to be having financial difficulties. There was also another corporation that attempted to get permits to withdraw massive amounts of water from the Michindoh Aquifer, Artesian of Pioneer, a private water company also based in Pioneer, Ohio. In 2019 Artesian of Pioneer proposed a large-scale groundwater pumping project that would draw up to 10 million gallons of water per day from the Michindoh Aquifer. The intent was to sell bulk water to other municipalities or industrial users outside the region. As of 2025, no permits have been approved for that large-scale withdrawal project, and the plan is on hold. Artesian of Pioneer is still referring to a proposed project (“in the process of building new wells”) rather than one large scale project. The reason for this long post is that I think collectively we need to be aware that these permits are being filed, and keep ourselves informed to maintain our “spring fed” lake. Also, the Michindoh Aquifer supplies drinking water for more than 385,000 residents, including Clear Lake, and irrigation for farms across the region.

Clear Lake friends, I am having a problem with my Yamaha 40 outboard pontoon motor. The alarm goes off after it is running fora short time. and I think it may be an overheating problem. Plentiful are the pinks, that are red and meaty inside, romas, cherry, and red tomatoes. Tomatoes are sold in bowls or individually. Tomatoes, tomatoes... They are now all ripening and I have a large amount of the tasty meaty brandywine and Belguim Pinks. Romas are also now ripening 6 for a $1 and 8 for a $1. Red onions and Non-GNO Onions, summer squash and Green beans too. Raspberries are very sparse and I only get 2 containers every other day. For the first time ever the Bees are eating them. Weather permitting, I should have produce through the end of October. As always, heirloom, natural and No pesticides used. The plan is sharing God's abundance. We're so inspired to see the posts concerning Clear Lake water preservation. Thank you. We came here to do the same re: another poisoning of the precious water. RE: your water levels, with so many Hospice nurses visiting these days compliments of the hvac refrigerant leak, we were recently told by our visiting nurse that it is an issue on all other lakes in the area as well due to lack of sufficient rain. Just passing that along. That said... here's our post and plea not to finish us off with more toxic poisoning of the lake which drifts for longer than anyone needs re: evaporation = drift. Our AI helped craft this simple plea since each application has set us back, and others, too, we heard, with weeks to months in our recovery, medically confirmed. This time, it's not likely recovery will be the result: "Clear Lake is more than water. It is habitat, heritage, and health. The continued use of aquatic herbicides disregards the mounting evidence of their impact on human well-being, aquatic life, and environmental integrity. We call for an immediate pause in chemical applications and demand the adoption of safe, proven, non-chemical alternatives that preserve both the lake’s clarity and our community’s health." ~ AI, Phynix Back to us: Please discontinue this poisoning of the lake, et al. Indiana Code 14-25-5 is Indiana's Emergency Regulation of Surface Water Rights law, which protects freshwater lake owners from the significant lowering of lake levels caused by high-capacity pumping facilities. Under this statute, if a significant water withdrawal facility's pumping lowers a freshwater lake's water level, causing potential significant harm to the lake or adjacent property, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) director can issue a temporary order to restrict pumping and restore the lake's water level.

Anyone think of the hundreds of water pumps in the lake removing water daily to care for beautiful lawns? Didn’t think so. Everyone’s property line ends at the waters edge. From there it’s State Property. Like a State Park the State wants its residents to use and enjoy these set aside and maintained areas. Cool! But, there is a problem. There’s a big difference in “using” and “removing”. Let’s say, I take my family over to Pokagon State Park. We spend a fun day with all the activities. When it is time to head home, I tell my wife we are low on firewood at the house. I cut down one of the Parks trees and load the wood in my truck to head home. Looks like Stan is going to need a great Clear Lake lawyer! Now, the Lake’s most important asset is its water. Removing, by pumping, the water from the lake for “one’s personal gain” seems like a theft to the State and all its residents. Called a good friend that lives on Hamilton Lake and he said flatly “pumping water out of an Indiana lake is illegal, except for the Fire Departments. He may be right or wrong, should check with the Indiana Department of Resources. Where is the Clear Lake Conservancy on this low water issue? Not an extreme downside, if the lake goes dry in 20 to 30 years, the State will build a great golf course and we already have the golf carts!! Maybe, my old cottage will look out over the 5th fairway!

Time to update the dam and get to the current times whether its global warming of whatever. The Lake (Dam) needs to be at a higher level for sure. The CLA had originally purchased 100 of these books and after our Labor Day sale event 42 remain available. The first printing of this book was done to help raise funds for the purchase of Kasota island. Tom, unfortunately most of us are in the same boat, no pun intended, actually there was. I haven't seen the lake this low from about that time as well. Years ago there was an actual working dam on Round Lake with a huge wheel that could be cranked up and down to the desired level. This created some controversy to a handful of Lakers. Some thought the lake should be this level and others thought it should be that level. So the powers that be, back then I'm not sure if it was the DNR or the Town decided to pick a level and removed the mechanical dam fixture, then poured a concrete ledge that keeps the lake at that certain level when the water rises. Unfortunately, they were wrong and apparently didn't allow for evaporation and drought conditions like we have now. The fix is quite easy though. Bring the "dam" ledge up another 6"-8" by pouring concrete on top of the ledge now, which would be quite simple or put back in a mechanical wooden device like before and be able to lock it somehow so no one can mess with it. If memory serves me it was quite a feud back then amongst some Lakers. Some actually used a bolt cutter at night to cut the chained lock and be able to put the dam where they desired. This definitely needs addressed. Meanwhile, pray for rain...........

Veggies and Fruit currently available at my stand across from Brennen Woods. Raspberries are slowly returning (watering daily, some blackberries and containers of juicy white peaches. Summer squash, zuchini, cucumbeers, Green beans, sweet cherry red and yellow tomatoes and finally bowls of red ripe tomatoes. Also red and white potatoes may be available. I have plenty Non GMO red, yellow and white onions soon and current upon request. Cantaloupe melons are still in need of ripening. My veggie stand across from Brennen Woods is starting to flourish with fresh veggies. Everything is late this year after a cold cloudy May. Daily picking fresh beans, cucumbers, summer squash, and fresh dug potatoes. Hopefully I will be providing these for months to come. My raspberries are growing rapidly and are filling up with many many berries for future picking. The next group will be larger and much more plentiful and continue thru mid October. Expecting that they will return mid August. In the meantime I am daily Picking a nice abundance of ripe blackberries. If my garden continues to be blest, I plan on having a nice variety of produce available. Sharing the abundance of heirloom, non-GMO pesticide free, healthy produce. Hope you visit and enjoy. Also I have a few small tomatoes available and waiting anxiously for the green ones to turn red.

I have the veggie / fruit stand at Clear Lake. Plants are grown from heirloom Non-GMO seeds and plants. Raspberries are finally here and placed at the stand today. Starting the picking of green and yellow beans, Kohlrabi, cucumbers, zucchini and yellow squash and potatoes this weekend. The cold cloudy month of May put all produce behind. Hopefully lots of healthy produce will be available going forward. Remember, NO pesticides used. Looking forward to meeting some of you at the stand. Tomorrow the Clear Lake Township Land Conservancy Run and Fun events are scheduled at the Clear Lake Lutheran Church pavilion at 270 Outer Drive.  Registration opens at 7:30. The 5K and 10 K race begins at 8:30 and the 1-mile walk/run begins at 9.  Fun Day activities begin at 9:00.  Come join the fun! Starting around 7 am, Chapel and Terrace Drive will be closed off to traffic. From 7:30 - 10, Outer Drive will be closed from Buck Point Drive to the Clear Lake Pub. From 10 - 11:30, Outer Drive will only be closed from Buck Point to Chapel. A police bike will lead the race, and another will be at the Ice Cream Store intersection. The 10K race goes all the way around Clear Lake, so please be careful when driving tomorrow morning. Thank you! Attendees and runners will be directed by volunteers onto Outer Drive for event parking as available. Carpooling for the events throughout the day is encouraged.

Harvesting lots and lots of fresh garden lettuce this week before the 90 degree weather arrives. Rhubarb is over and very little asparagus coming up. The cold cloudy month of May slowed down the gardens but they are now starting to flourish. Bees are in the raspberries doing there job. Coolers by the road contain $2.00 and $3.00 sacks of lettuce.

2025 Summer CLYC youth tennis camp is being held for kids ages 7-14. Erin Kolar, Trine Tennis Coach, will be leading the sessions along with volunteers. Camp will be held Mon, Wed, Thurs during the weeks of July 7th and July 14 from 10-11:30am at the CLYC courts. The camp is free and will be limited to 20 kids per week. I’ve looked all over the websites and haven’t been able to find how to alert the “buoy team” that the buoy placed directly off our dock is too close for safety. Our boat anchor (not moveable) plus the length of most boats (15 to 20 ft) looks like the area between the buoy and other lake activities is going to be too tight. As we all know ski boats and evening pontoon boaters hug the buoys in this bay. If the buoys are too close to end of docks it cuts down the room for kayaking and paddle boarding as well as boat ingress and egress. How do I contact someone make them aware?

Just now seeing the posts about Tom. I am very sorry to hear this, and my thoughts and prayers go to the extended Eckrich family. As we are all reading, I'm sure there are several hundred stories of Tom and his incredibly selfless service of Clear Lakers. Ours is from about 10 years ago when the fuel pump went out on our '97 Ski Nautique with our relatives visiting from AZ...our "one week of the year" vacation. Tom got the new pump and installed it after hours to keep our early morning ski runs intact. I remember him as such an amazingly humble and thoughtful gentleman. Rest in peace.

Totally agree with the recent posts about Tom Echrich Jr. Clear Lake won't be the same with out Eck. Just a few years ago my mom had five high school girlfriends up for a weekend. Of course her pontoon had an engine issue and wouldn't run right. I called Tom and he came right over on a Saturday morning, diagnosed the problem, went and got parts (fuel pump failure) repaired it on the lift then stopped in and visited mom and her girlfriends (all 80 years plus old) to let her know they were good to go! Tom saved the weekend for them. I have several other stories like that about Eck. A selfless humblle man. Rest in peace brother, you will be missed.

Katie, So sorry to learn about Eck. The lovely newspaper obituary and accolades expressed here on the CLBB are a proper tribute to Tom. He was, in my opinion, a true, modern day Renaissance Man...A term maybe forgotten by the younger generation, but the definition of Tom. I had the pleasure of working with and for him when I operated Cottage Industries of Clear Lake a couple decades ago.. He and I may have taken your boat, dock, lift or PWC out of the water RIP ECK !! You've earned it !

The loss of Eck will leave a huge hole in the community of Clear Lake and in our family. I was honored to have him as a friend and spent years with him working on boats all over the lakes of Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan. On countless occasions he sacrificed time with his family to save a weekend on the water for someone in need. He considered all of his customers and every dog as a friend. It is of some comfort to know that he will live on in the memories and stories of so many Clear Lakers. Prayers to his family during this difficult time.

Tom Eckrich will be missed by everyone at Clear Lake and the Lowry family especially. He was one of a kind. Tom was a person whom had many sides, but always treated everyone the same. His personality came through as a humble man of many talents, most important talent to our family -fixing things. When he would stop by our cottage to fix one of the many boats, snowmobiles, wave runners or mowers he would always take extra time, sometimes an hour or more, and talk to my parents whom were in their late 80's and early 90's. I was impressed by his kindness and will forever appreciate his simple act of listening and spending time with my parents which changed their day for better. Thanks Tom Eckrich - we will miss you. Its time for the annual ICE OFF contest! Make your best guess for when the lake will be totally free of ice and have the fame and glory of all that goes with it! I was just out on the lake and the ice is still about 11" thick in the North Bay. It's been an awesome winter season for those who love the ice and snow, haven't seen this type of winter for many years! Make your best guess on the date the lake will be ice free and be the winner of the annual ICE OFF contest. Last year Julie Butigen correctly picked the date. This year is going to be even more diffucult with the current thickness of the ice. Last year we put our dock in March 2nd.......... Good Luck!

LOST ON ICE - one Go Pro camera in clear plastic case. Probably has some good footage.LOL. Camera blew-flew off its mount and is Likely between yacht club to the island somewhere. Best ice in years....Very Very good ice conditions on Feb. 8-9 for ice (hard water) boats.

Tony, I took a couple laps on the ice in my Ranger tonight about sunset. Ice looks good, measured about 9 inches again in the North Bay. I went around the Island and as long as you don't go to close to the West shore where the geese are keeping it open you should be fine, IMHO. I'm planning on running my DN on Saturday afternoon if not before. As long as we don't get too much snow on Saturday conditions should be near perfect as long as the winds are there. Took a run last Saturday and the winds quit on me, had to walk it back to the cottage, hopefully this weekend will be better winds!

How is the ice holding up on lake? Hoping to sail DN's there Feb. 7-8. I've been seeing comments on thickness, and I know the geese are have a nice open water area on W. side of island. ( can see on webcams). Any ice fishermen updates on thickness, or areas to be "aware of"? Any input appreciated.

Just a heads up about 2 nasty dogs in the area around the yacht club. Please be very careful if you are walking or taking your pooch for a walk. These two dogs sound like they could be very nasty. They did chase someone walking her dog and tryed to get in to her house. I would not go for a walk until we hear that the dogs are no longer a threat. From now on I will be walking with a canister of bear spray and if I feel threatened by a dog or dogs I will use it.

I measured the ice thickness in the North Bay again today, 9" out there. The mild warm up should melt the top layer of snow/ice making it ideal for Ice Boat Sailing by the weekend, hopefully.
